What should an online store automate first?

What should you automate first?

Automate the step a person repeats on every order and that you can check when it fails. For most stores that is the path from a paid order to the warehouse, the carrier and the invoice.

Do not start with a clever feature nobody asked for. Start with the copy-paste your team complains about.

How do you pick the step?

Watch one real order from payment to delivery and write down every time someone retypes a field. The longest chain of retyping is the first candidate.

If a step needs judgment, such as a damaged return or a custom quote, leave it to a person and automate only the handoff.

How do you keep it safe?

Every automated step needs an alert when it fails and a way to see the last successful run. Silent failure is worse than the manual work it replaced.

Agree what the system must never do on its own, such as refunding a payment or deleting a product. Those stay behind a person.

What comes after the first workflow?

Once orders move without retyping, look at stock updates and the product feeds for the other channels you sell on. Those are the next place totals drift apart.

Add reporting only after the workflow is stable. A dashboard of bad data makes the Monday meeting faster and still wrong.
